Is It Really That Hard to Follow Your Dreams?
We grow up hearing “follow your dreams” like it’s a fairytale ending. But what if the problem starts with the word dream itself?

- The tension between longing and reality
- The courage it takes to act on something meaningful even if it’s small

Rosie (00:00)
what's on your mind? You just had a life-changing concert seeing Alanis Morissette live last night. I was quite envious. But what's on your mind?
Roula (00:02)
Mmm.
have? Well, you know, because I was in that place yesterday and thinking about how dreams come true and dreams don't have to be big and outrageous. Our dreams can be so tiny and little and meaningful. So why don't we talk about that?
Rosie (00:36)
Yeah.
Okay. All right. You ask the question though. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Yeah.
Roula (00:42)
Yes. So my question to you, Rosie,
which I don't know, I have not formulated my question. My question would be.
Is it hard to make our dreams come true?
Rosie (01:12)
Ooh, I think, and as usual, I'm forming my thoughts on the fly. I think we make it out to be more difficult than it is because we sort of grow up to think it's unrealistic to live your dream life or have your dream job or do whatever you've always dreamt of. That's unrealistic. It's really hard if you want to do your dreams and you're dreaming if you think your dream is going to come true.
Roula (01:44)
⁓ you're dreaming if you think your dream is gonna come true.
Wow.
Rosie (01:50)
I mean.
What do you think?
Roula (01:53)
Yeah,
build on that. Because it's sometimes when we say our dream, we're, either we don't want to say our dream because people will take it lightly or the yeah keep dreaming.
Rosie (02:07)
Yeah. Okay. So let's go. What is a dream? A dream? We're sleeping and we have a dream. It's not real. So already when we're talking about our dream life, our goals, we're using a word dream that in its literal sense is something that's not true. It's just our imagination. Why on earth do we do that? We're kind of like making out. It's not going to happen.
Roula (02:33)
What else could it be called?
Why do we say a dream coming true?
Rosie (02:39)
I lost.
Hmm. Yeah, what? Okay, tell me! Yeah!
Roula (02:43)
I think I can answer my own question.
You know, when we say our dream, I want to make my dream come true, is this dream such a thing that is inexplicable, out of dimensions, our dimension, surreal. And when we have something we want to make happen, it feels so surreal, so far from reality.
Rosie (03:04)
Mm.
Yes, it's not reality.
Roula (03:15)
that we say it's
a dream.
Rosie (03:18)
What? This is a, this is fucking with my head. We're setting ourselves up for failure by calling it a dream. It's this unattainable goal. But is it? What? Okay, Roula. Has one of your dreams ever come true?
Roula (03:31)
⁓ yeah, yeah.
Many of my dreams came true. Many.
Rosie (03:39)
And what
was your original question? it hard? Was that the question? Okay, so was it hard for your dreams to come true?
Roula (03:42)
Is it hard for our dream to come true? Yes.
Let me take you with me in this story. And I don't hope this is going to be very long. Already we've been talking for 10 minutes. So growing up in the war, my ultimate dream was to live in country of peace. I have not imagined in my wildest dreams. Remember, notice how many times I'm using the word dreams.
Rosie (03:49)
Okay, yeah.
Roula (04:12)
in my wildest dreams that I will live in a country that have not known war since the World War II.
And this dream came true in an most incredible way, but it included circumstances, included opportunities, it included courage and the willing to follow my dream. Because if I didn't want to leave my family and my environment and my friends and everything I knew I grew up in,
I wouldn't have made my dream come true by coming to the Netherlands, moving to the Netherlands with my ex at that time, for my ex. So if I had my fears and I didn't want to take the risk, I wouldn't be able to make my dream come true.
Rosie (04:56)
Right.
Roula (05:13)
But though do we have it in us every time?
Rosie (05:16)
Oof. Mmm. I think we have it in us to try every time. And we need to acknowledge that just because we don't achieve our dream doesn't mean we're a failure. Does it?
Roula (05:30)
course not. Dream is, it's also, it doesn't have to be very big. You know, saying to you, going to Alanis is a dream coming true. What it took me to make this dream come true is get over the fact that do I want to go alone to a concert? Do I want to go alone and not share my love to Alanis with my husband or with my daughter? It took me time to feel the selfishness.
Rosie (05:38)
Yeah.
Ooooo
Mm.
Roula (05:59)
of what I really want to make this dream come true because my dream is not only go to Alanis, it's go alone to Alanis.
Rosie (06:08)
Wow. Is this a dream you ever said out loud?
Just a feeling almost. A feeling.
Wow.
Are they just desires? It's what we want. Is that what it is?
Roula (06:42)
I love the word desire, yeah.
Rosie (06:44)
I bet you do.
back through the archives there are plenty of episodes where we talk about sex so desire ties in with that but obviously
Roula (06:59)
Rosie,
what is your dream? What do you feel that a dream of yours came true?
Rosie (07:04)
Moving into the van, full time. That was a dream I had for almost a decade.
Roula (07:12)
And how did you make it happen?
Rosie (07:16)
I I had to be patient and forgive myself for it not happening straight away and realize that just because it took me years to start taking action doesn't mean that I shouldn't pursue it. So I had to work hard and be brave and go, okay, I'm really scared. I don't know what I'm doing. This could go wrong, very wrong, but I just slowly and steadily did it. Initially, I wanted to get the van converted in six months. It took me four years.
So what it took was grit and determination. Yeah, you're right. It wasn't easy, but it felt right. in that way, in that way, it wasn't hard. It felt right.
Roula (07:51)
Yeah.
Yes. And they change. These dreams change depending on where we are in our lives. And sometimes the time for them to happen is not now. We don't know when. And could be also that some dreams don't need to happen at all because their beauty is to remain as an aspiration, as a longing, something we long for. And if they don't happen, they keep us going.
Rosie (08:06)
Yeah.
Yeah.
Ooh.
Roula (08:29)
as long as they are meant to make us happy and not a dream of being free, for example, from an abusive relationship or have, of course, have a better life, have food on their table. Dreams can be so crazy and impactful and painful too.
Rosie (08:53)
⁓ painful, yeah!
Dreams, feelings, desires, goals. I think they all tie together somehow.
Roula (09:07)
Yes, they are. are. Yes, it's who we are. We make our dreams and we make them come true little by little or not. So, my dear listeners, we're not talking about the dreams we have when we are sleeping. These are the dreams we have that kind of form us in secret because we don't share them.
Rosie (09:08)
Mm.
⁓ secret.
Yeah. ⁓ secrets.
Yeah. ⁓ You know, talking about dreams has got me really excited because a dream of mine, I'll try not to ramble. We've been very chatty this episode, but dream of mine I've had since I was a little girl. I think this is probably the longest dream I have ever, ever had is to have my own block of land.
Roula (09:37)
Yeah.
Rosie (09:56)
When I was a little girl, yeah, yeah. When I was a little girl and I couldn't sleep, I'd tell mom, can you tell me about my block of land? And she'd just talk to me, make up a story about the animals on my land and all the beautiful things. And having this conversation made me think of that. I would love if I get that dream. Maybe I won't. And that's okay because the feeling I get when I think about it and envision it, I...
Roula (09:56)
Yes, you said this to me a while ago. Tell me.
Rosie (10:26)
really special.
Roula (10:29)
Yes. Well, you know, ⁓ keep this dream. I don't know what's my next dream because now I'm so fulfilled with my experience of yesterday at the concert. And yeah, I think it gives us a drive. It gives us hope.
Rosie (10:33)
Mmm.
Drive.
Roula (10:50)
And on the Rosie and Roula show, we like to keep it positive. We're not toxic positive. We know there is so much in our life and people's life that is not positive. But the purpose of our episodes is to ⁓ feel happiness because it gives us the drive to deal with our sadness.
Rosie (11:01)
Mmm.
Yeah. Or belonging. Not even, I
think it's not even has, doesn't even have to be happiness, but belonging and connection, I think is what I really want it to bring. Now keep it recording. Keep it recording. Just in case. People on TikTok. Yes, you keep recording. Don't fucking touch the button. All right. I'm the boss. No, But it's so-
Roula (11:22)
Yes, I love it.
Okay, I keep recording.
⁓ my goodness. Sorry, mammy as
mam.
Rosie (11:39)
⁓ people are listening. What are your thoughts on dreams? In fact, write your dream in the chat. You might be a little bit shy, so I don't know if anyone's going to do this. What is one of your dreams? And do you think it's hard to achieve our dreams? I just saw a whole bunch of people leave the live stream. That scared Roula. ⁓ It like halved.
As soon as I said that, is anyone brave enough to share a dream or tell us?
if you think dreams are hard to achieve. We might be waiting a while, we'll see. I'm giving people a chance.
Roula (12:20)
I'm wondering what the quality is of my voice on the tape.
Rosie (12:23)
⁓ professional fighter!
Ash says he wants to be a professional or she sorry they said they want to be a professional fighter and they think it's Love that dream. I think so yeah like a martial arts fighter yeah. Mix martial arts or yeah. No I mean people do it right?
Roula (12:34)
Martial Arts Fighter
Yes, that's hard. That's hard, but not impossible. Because, you know,
people do it definitely. And okay, ⁓ I'm going to answer this in an encouraging way because professional martial arts fighter can boxer. Yes. You know, it's a harsh
Rosie (12:54)
Okay, alright.
He says boxer, he wants to be a professional boxer. Yeah.
Roula (13:03)
place and it's kind of have so much money and monopoly in it too. But becoming a professional boxer have so much impact on communities and it doesn't really have to be famous on TV or in the ring only. Professional boxer in your life you can build so much for the coming generations because our young people have to learn to defend themselves and have to learn how to be
Rosie (13:08)
Mmm.
⁓
Roula (13:33)
good in fighting, fighting for the good reasons. And I find professional boxers when they're when they're doing the right thing, they're such a quite inspiration.
Rosie (13:42)
It teaches you discipline, it teaches you strength, and what a cool way to model to future generations, current ones as well, how to use our aggression and our physicality in a really productive, powerful way.
Roula (13:46)
It's very hard,
Yes.
Rosie (14:00)
What a cool dream. We're in your corner, Ash. We're in your corner. And thank you for being brave to share that. Thank you.
Roula (14:02)
Beautiful.
Ha!
Rosie (00:00)
TikTok was still here by the way, that's just for the recording. ⁓ Barb just bang on, did you stop? You did. Are you still recording? good, because Barb just sent in a message. She's actually one of the winners of the merchandise from episode 100. She says, I simply want to help more people. So my dream is to become more financially stable. Wow. So there's a purpose behind your dream, yeah? Yeah.
Roula (00:07)
no no no i didn't i'm still recording yes
her dreams
for her and for the others.
Rosie (00:31)
⁓ yeah?
Roula (00:32)
Not it's not only a dream for her. She wants to make other people's dream come true by helping them, no matter how small it is. Help. It's beautiful. Thank you, Barb.
Rosie (00:36)
Yeah? Yeah,
Mmm. I think so too.
Yeah, thank you.
Roula (00:48)
Valuable, yes.
Rosie (00:49)
Yeah.
Cool. Thanks for the follow Ash, appreciate you.
Now back to Myree's dream. She would like, or they would like to run a dog rescue.
That's cool.
Roula (01:02)
Wow.
I don't know why this gave me goosebumps because there are so many like animals suffering. It's beautiful. Yes. Dogs rescue. Yes.
Rosie (01:06)
Hey Goosebumps!
And the number of dogs who have come to where I'm staying that are strays
or have been dumped is crazy. There was one the other week, might've been a month ago now, it had a wound on its tail and it was quite skinny. And I posted on a community group on Facebook and someone had actually seen the owner dump this dog and just leave them. So I had to call the ranger and the ranger came maybe nine o'clock in the morning and they said, Rosie, this is the sixth dog.
we have had to come and pick up this morning.
Roula (01:46)
⁓ goodness, people don't get dogs you can't look after. Don't! Just stay away from having a pet if you're not responsible. Yes. Yes, we're behind you on this.
Rosie (01:53)
They're so vulnerable, aren't they? Yeah. So what a cool dream. I love it, Myree. And Barb is asking,
yes, I think this should be a long episode special. I like this interaction. So Barb is asking if we'll be doing this in the future like this, because she loves it. I think maybe we could.
Roula (02:14)
Why
not? We need to get ourselves more organized and have a special day for it. Today is our recording day. ⁓
Rosie (02:17)
Yeah, it might not. Yeah,
it might not be every week. We'll see if we can figure it out because the thing is, usually our episodes are 10 to 15 minutes. This has been going for like almost 25. So we're going to have to find a rhythm that works, but this is fun. I like it. I like it a lot.
Right. And on that note, we'll catch you in the next episode.
