124: Is It Really Hard to Follow Our Dreams? - The Alanis Morissette Dream - Part 1

Dreams That Don’t Look Like Dreams

A concert. A car ride. A voice from your teenage years.

This week, Rosie and Roula explore how the smallest experiences like seeing Alanis Morissette live can crack open memories, grief, healing, and joy.

What starts as a catch-up turns into a beautiful conversation about loss, growth, and the power of fulfilling tiny, meaningful dreams. Roula reflects on how Alanis’ music became a way to grieve her mother, while Rosie brings her Gen X reverence and TikTok chaos into the mix.

It’s a love letter to music, memory, and the underrated art of doing something just for you.

This episode explores:

How songs anchor us to past versions of ourselves

The power of doing something alone — just because you want to

Why small joys often carry the biggest emotional weight

What makes a dream “valid,” even if no one claps for it

If you’ve ever cried at a concert, driven just to feel something, or needed a reminder that your dreams don’t need to be big to be real — this one’s for you.

Rosie (00:00)
talking now.

Roula (00:01)
Is it better? Do you hear me clearer? ⁓ very good.

Rosie (00:03)
Yes, it seems to be when I join

the studio first it goes weird. Now I have a question.

Roula (00:08)
Yeah.

Rosie (00:12)
I thought we could live stream it to my TikTok account because if I can take my earphones out they'll be able to hear me and you. They won't be able to see well but it could be fun for them to here Should we try?

Roula (00:25)
Yeah, let's try. So we're to

start with whatever conversation we're having. Okay.

Rosie (00:30)
Yeah? Let me take

the earphones out and we'll check it sounds okay.

Rosie (00:49)
I want to know how the concert was, Roula I didn't realize you were going to Alanis Morisette It's just started streaming, yeah. We don't have to talk about it. Yeah.

Roula (00:56)
Are we live now?

⁓ okay.

Yes, yes. No, no, very briefly before we talk about it. I thought, OK, I'm not wearing my Rosie and Roula T-shirt today because I'm wearing my Alanis T-shirt. Yeah. And I thought, my God, Rosie, maybe we're going to be upset because I'm not wearing it. And here you are not wearing your Rosie and Roula T-shirt.

Rosie (01:14)
You are, yes.

We're both naughty

Roula (01:27)
I feel like

it's a state of mind what I wear when we're recording. today my state of mind is I'm high, but I'm grounded. Yeah, I'm short, but I'm healthy.

Rosie (01:36)
Yeah! Such a good lyric.

Roula (01:42)
⁓ So yes, yesterday, Alanis concert was mesmerizing. You know, when sometimes we talk about dreams coming true, and this is a dream coming true for me, because in my wildest dreams, I did not think I would go to see someone live that had such an impact on my life and my teenage years.

Rosie (01:48)
Mmm.

Yeah.

Roula (02:11)
Alanis is one of them. The most impactful for me is that at the concert, a time to process my grief about my mom, because every Sunday while I was living in Lebanon, my mom and I, go for a ride in my car and I play Alanis because my mom loves her voice.

Rosie (02:19)
Mmm. ⁓

Roula (02:34)
And I didn't know she's gonna be in concert. When I saw it, it was sold out, so I bought a ticket on Ticket Swap for me alone because I wanted to go alone. I had to be there. I cried. I laughed. I was in a totally different world. And when the concert finished, I just couldn't get enough. That's why I was late this morning because I woke up a little bit. ⁓

Rosie (02:42)
Yeah.

Yeah.

Roula (03:03)
grumpy because that I didn't want it to end. I felt like a child who's so disappointed.

Rosie (03:04)
Ooooo ⁓

Yeah!

but was it amazing? Yeah. Wow. Yeah.

Roula (03:12)
And I, yeah. Yeah. my goodness. Her voice, her presence is so beautiful. And she's an activist

So the first couple of songs where she sung her songs, but behind her, the screen was displaying numbers and facts about how much women are being. ⁓ mishandeld abused ⁓ children marriage. ⁓

Rosie (03:38)
Wow.

Roula (03:42)
salary gap, so much facts, but facts that are quite depressing because it's so confronting. On the other hand, there were so many men at the concert lining up to buy her t-shirts, singing, standing. And I'm like, you know, these are the kind of men I want to have in my life. If they listen to Alanis, I want them in my life. They cannot be, they only can be tonic. They cannot be toxic.

Rosie (03:48)
Mm.

Yeah.

That's cool. That is cool.

Yeah,

right. Yeah. That's so cool. Yeah. She's awesome. Like how old were you when her music was coming out? Young teenager? Okay. Yeah.

Roula (04:20)
around 18 because

I was driving so I must have been 18 yeah. Jagged little pill. Yeah. And she's so small and beautiful and she just keep moving. She cannot stand still. It's crazy because I felt like if you have epilepsy that would be very disturbing to see someone moving this fast.

Rosie (04:27)
Mm. Mm.

Yeah, I was just about to say that. Yeah.

True.

Is she your age or she's older? Yeah. And, but another awesome Gen Xer, right?

Roula (04:51)
I think so. think so. Probably a bit older. I don't know.

Another awesome gen Xer. Yes. Yeah.

Rosie (04:58)
There's a few of you out there.

⁓ Before we jump into our first episode, which I don't know what it's going to be, we are live streaming on TikTok, which is a little experiment. We haven't really got the right setup, but if you are on TikTok right now, hello, I'm Rosie, who you can't see is Roula And together we do the Rosie and Roula show and we wanted to record live today. So if you fancy interacting,

Roula (05:03)
So good.

Mm-hmm.

Rosie (05:30)
drop a question or a comment in the chat because we might use your question for an episode. So feel free to engage. I'll try to look at the screen when I can, but it is an experiment. So Roula back to you. You got all my attention.

Roula (05:44)
Yes,

I'm just a guest today on TikTok because this is an unknown world to me. So here we are.

Rosie (05:50)
Yeah!

But what's on your mind? You just had a life-changing concert seeing Alanis Morissette live last night. I was quite envious. But what's on your mind?

Roula (05:56)
Mmm.

Well, you know, because I was in that place yesterday and thinking about how dreams come true and dreams don't have to be big and outrageous. Our dreams can be so tiny and little and meaningful. So why don't we talk about that?

Rosie (06:31)
Yeah.
