168: We Finally Talk About Our Reality TV Addiction (and Penises, Apparently)

Rosie has a confession: she fell into a reality TV rabbit hole and binge-watched Dating Naked. Hours of nudity, awkward first dates, and one very curious fascination with how penises move when men walk. Naturally, Roula had thoughts.

What starts as a guilty pleasure chat turns into a surprisingly honest talk about why reality TV pulls us in, the double standards in how men and women carry themselves, and how queer and older dating shows can actually teach us something real about love and vulnerability.

From Love Is Blind: Queer Edition to dating shows for people in their 60s, this episode is equal parts hilarious and heartfelt โ€” and a reminder that curiosity doesnโ€™t come with an age limit.

Have you ever watched something trashy and ended up learning something unexpected about yourself?

Rosie (00:00)
Rula.

I am hesitant to talk about this because I'm embarrassed, but we just, we, we do real talk here and I need your perspective.

So my friend gave me her login to Paramount Plus. I don't know if you have it in the Netherlands. It's a streaming service like And there's lots of reality TV shows. I always thought I didn't like reality TV. Well.

Well, well, well, the other week in the space of maybe two or three nights, I binge watched a whole season of a show called Dating Naked. Can you guess, can you guess what this TV show was about?

Roula (01:02)
people dating naked? Nudist?

Rosie (01:04)
Literally.

Yep. So they're sent to an island or the group of men and women who don't know each other are sent to an island and they are naked 24 seven and they're on camera. And it's just, see what happens. I watched a whole season. I spent hours of my life watching this trash. It was so bad. It was so, I was so like, โ“ like, know what?

I found fascinating the way penises move when men walk. They just doink around everywhere. I couldn't stop looking. It's like what the?

I'm like wow, how annoying!

wasn't as if it really added any value to my life. I was just invested. And it sounds like Yoshi's invested too. Yoshi's just going, ROWW!

Have you ever fallen into this trap of watching reality TV or is it just me?

Roula (02:07)
So we're talking about reality TV, not about why you found this, the naked dating interesting.

Rosie (02:12)
Okay, you can interpret

why I found it interesting. Sure. Let's hear your interpretation.

Roula (02:16)
And I love

when you tell me this, it's like a ruler. Just come on, start with your bullshit.

Rosie (02:22)
Yeah, pretty much. Come

on, let's hear it. Is it going to be about dildos again?

Roula (02:28)
goodness. No. All right. All right. So, yes, I'm going to also talk to you about the reality TV show that I've been watching. OK, but first, this naked thing. I mean, it's interesting because you've never seen this before.

Rosie (02:37)
okay, yeah.

Yeah.

I've seen penises, but I haven't spent a lot of time around them or like, no, like, yeah, it was all very new. And you know what? I could not stop looking, not because I was like, ooh, look at that. But I was like, this is fascinating. The women on there, whatever, I was just looking at their faces when they talked. The men, I'm like, oh, what's it like when they sit down? What's it like when they're walking, when they bend over?

Roula (03:10)
So you looked at the faces of the women

when they talked and you looked at the penis of the man when they talked. So yeah, their penis is talking.

Rosie (03:20)
Even the way they

sat, like the women would sit so that you couldn't see their vagina or, โ“ you know, down there. What do you call it? What's the proper word for what you actually... Yeah, thank you. The vulva. There we

Roula (03:30)
the valva hold on i have to open the door for my

Rosie (03:33)
so

the women would cross their legs, you can't see their vulva or their labia or whatever. None of it. The men, you know, episode about men spreading, they were sitting on camera, on camera, legs wide apart, everything just hanging out, every single one of them. Not one of the women did that. And I'm like...

Why?

Like what? Like what? โ“

Roula (03:59)
Look, well, two weeks ago, my husband and I went to the spa. And listeners, we have an episode about the naked spa. Yeah. So we went to the spa. And now that you're talking, I remember him and we were like that day. We were also impressed. There were so many men with quite imposing body parts, imposing penises.

Rosie (04:04)
Yeah.

We do, yes!

They

were well endowed. Yeah.

Roula (04:30)
And then now that you're talking, you know, just like our boobs are, we can't tuck them anywhere. They also can tuck their penises anywhere. But they're like man spreading and sit. It's just doing it on purpose anyway. OK, so now we talked about this enough. Let's talk about the reality TV reality. OK, I remember the very first reality TV I watched in my life was the Ozzy Osbourne.

Rosie (04:37)
True. This is true. I hadn't thought of it like that.

Okay. Okay.

Roula (04:58)
show. It was also one of the first to be live. And I must through all these years in the 25 years watch something else. I can't remember what, but recently, oh, I never watched Big Brother, Temptation Island. I don't watch these things. I mean, I think I was in an age range that I wasn't interested anymore in this stuff when they were coming out. But recently, I watched

Rosie (04:59)
โ“ yes.

Right, yeah.

you

Roula (05:26)
one edition and I'm not interested in the other. I watched Love is Blind, the queer edition.

Rosie (05:29)
Okay.

Yes, it's so good! That was addictive. Yes, why did you love it?

Roula (05:37)
I loved it. Only

that edition I liked it. Why? Because I'm not

Rosie (05:43)
Yeah, I watched the straight version.

I'm talking over you, but the straight version was ill, but tell me. Yes, I'm listening. Mouth shut.

Roula (05:49)
okay. So a straight version

is not interesting for me because I'm in a straight relationship. My friends are straight. Not all of them. I do have gay friends too. So it's like, I know this environment. I know how men think, how women think. I'm not interested, but I really wanted to watch the queer edition. It blew my mind because I fell in love with so many personalities on this show. And also it showed me how

Rosie (05:56)
Okay.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Roula (06:19)
they were much they were very at certain point really authentic and I listened to their struggles because there were a few girls that couldn't tell their parents they are queer do you in a straight epi TV reality you don't have people saying I can't tell my parents I'm straight so

Rosie (06:25)
Mmm.

Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Right.

Roula (06:44)
It touched me also their personality, what they're looking for. โ“ Yes, it was an eye opener for me. These are human beings that deserve so much more than what the society is giving them and the social, you know, the cultures. So that's for me why I liked Love is Blind Queer Edition.

Rosie (07:09)
Wow, you just made it very meaningful. There you go. Wow. Yeah, I think the reason I liked the queer edition is it's just, you don't get to see it. And it was cool. Cool to see. And then I watched the straight edition and they just, it was the same concept, but it annoyed me. Probably because yeah, I've seen that all the time. Whatever. Like, ew, go away. I don't know.

Roula (07:15)
But all the other ones I'm not interested in.

Yeah, yeah, could be, could be. There is another

TV reality that I'm watching and then my husband like he just watched over my head and when I look he just turned around. It's the dating show for people that are 60 plus.

Rosie (07:45)
pretends he doesn't want no watch it, but he does, yeah.

โ“ cool!

Roula (07:57)
And no, no, seriously, even my husband and I, we both watched one episode. It was fascinating. The ladies are amazing. They're achievers. They're really looking for love. The guys too. It gives so much hope for me. look to it in the future eyes because I'm getting towards my sixties and I like to watch people who are living the best life.

this age because they inspire me.

Rosie (08:25)
Right.

Right, yeah.

Roula (08:28)
But my husband is 45 and I really think when someone becomes 50 and beyond, your interests shift. So for someone who's 45, it's still too early to watch people dating in their 60s.

Rosie (08:43)
I wanna watch it!

Roula (08:45)
I loved it. I think you will really like it too.

Rosie (08:49)
I'll have to, is it in English? Okay. Okay. I'll have to look it up. Yeah. Because I feel like dating when you're older, I don't know what you'd call that age group. Not older as in your thirties, but older as in, yeah, like 50 plus. Yeah. It would be quite different. Quite different. Like you. Yeah.

Roula (08:51)
Yeah, it's American.

Yeah.

as a retired person, most of them either they're, yeah.

but it also can be so beautiful and

they all have desires and they all have passion. This doesn't go away with age. It fascinated me.

Rosie (09:24)
Yeah, that's cool. I need to go look that one up. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has fallen victim to reality TV.

Roula (09:32)
No, we're all curious to watch, but I don't watch too much. Most of them I find, โ“ please, I can't deal with this. Now, younger people, know Gen Z, my kids, for example, they do watch reality TV. For them, it's all new. You know, the experiences, the interactions, the conversations. But when you become older, you've seen it. It's nothing exciting. So I think.

Rosie (09:35)
We are all curious.

Mmm.

Yeah.

Roula (10:01)
that the target audience is not 50 plus like me, but the one for the 60 plus dating is my, I'm their audience.

Rosie (10:05)
Hmm.

is, yeah, yeah,

true. Not all reality TV's trashy. Some of it's quite meaningful, isn't it?

Roula (10:17)
Mmm, few of them.

Rosie (10:19)
A of them.

All right, that's all. That's all. I've got my dirty secret off my chest now. I watched Dating Naked and I stared at penises.

Roula (10:26)
Ooh.

What a premiere!

Rosie (10:34)
Bye everyone!

Roula (10:35)
Alright,

bye listeners!
