Sex Tapes: Leaked or Launched?
From Paris Hilton to Pamela Anderson, “leaked” sex tapes have shaped careers, sparked scandals, and provoked endless debate. But how many of these tapes are truly accidental and how many are strategic moves dressed as tabloid chaos?
This week, Rosie and Roula wade into murky waters, asking uncomfortable questions about privacy, power, shame, and sex. They explore what it means to consent to attention, how women often take the blame, and why our voyeuristic culture plays a bigger role than we think.
This episode explores:
- Why people record their own sex lives in the first place
- The blurry line between privacy violation and publicity stunt
- How leaked tapes often define women but never their male partners
- Our collective guilt in watching what was never meant to be seen
This one’s spicy, reflective, and true to form unapologetically honest.
sex tapes, consent, social media, privacy, cultural differences, fame, ethics, public perception, trust, relationships

Roula (00:01)
Rosie.
Rosie (00:03)
Yeah.
Roula (00:04)
Have you been eating in this small break?
Rosie (00:08)
B.
Roula (00:09)
What are you eating?
Rosie (00:12)
Don't judge me. Salt and vinegar crisps.
Roula (00:15)
I love them.
Rosie (00:17)
I don't know why I said crisps. In Australia we say chips and people overseas get confused because they go well chips are hot but over here there's hot chips and there's chips and chips and they're both chips. Like from the fish and chip. Yeah we don't call them fries here.
Roula (00:19)
Yeah.
What's hot chips? Fries?
the nice thing about the Netherlands, whatever you say, everyone understands it because all kind of English are mixed up in this country. Yeah, yeah. You know, gosh, I just wanted to say something about chips and crisps.
Rosie (00:41)
They're from all over. Mmm.
Getting old.
Roula (00:52)
I'm lucky I'm getting old. Shut up. Okay.
Rosie (00:54)
True, I
can't argue with that.
Roula (00:57)
I'm still drinking from my fancy teacup because we recorded half an hour ago our 50th episode and I'm still drinking from it. Or should I switch to another glass to look like we're recording on another day?
Rosie (01:03)
This is true. That, yeah.
You could. You could because
this episode is coming out like three weeks after the 50th episode. you know.
Roula (01:14)
Okay,
no, I will change it later. Okay, okay. This question, Rosie, is going to hit you like a hurricane.
Rosie (01:18)
If
god, yep. No. But ask anyway.
Roula (01:26)
Are you ready?
You know, probably you remember or you're too young to remember but before Instagram got famous, TikTok, Facebook, all this stuff in the year 2000, in the 2000s, sex tapes were a hot thing. Okay? From Paris Hilton to Pamela Anderson to what's her name? Kardashian, all these sex tapes.
Rosie (01:57)
Mmm.
Yeah.
Roula (02:10)
And my question today for you, do you think they're made on purpose or are they truly leaking?
Rosie (02:24)
do I want to answer this? I'm going to make some enemies. I mean...
Roula (02:24)
It is the sex tape, but it's it sounds
like a deep conversation.
Rosie (02:32)
Yeah, I'm uncomfortable. I don't know if this is a hurricane. It's more of a quicksand situation. No, no, no, no, I don't know how to navigate this because it's going to involve being very judgmental. I have nothing to go off here. So was it, wasn't it Paris Hilton? Like her sex tape kind of made her famous, right? That was her claim to fame. So it makes me go, hmm.
Roula (02:37)
If you don't want to talk about it, we don't have to record it.
Things that make you go, ooh. Things that makes you go, ooh.
Rosie (03:02)
different preferences, okay? Their sex lives and everybody's are very different. Maybe they do like to record it. I've never done that. Do I have the desire to? Haven't really thought about it, but it's not something that kind of appeals to me. But I think it does to other people. ⁓ yeah. Okay.
Roula (03:19)
Hold on, on, hold on. Okay. So why do you, that's, that's a good one.
They have, why have they recorded it in the first place?
Rosie (03:27)
Right. Well, let's-
Roula (03:29)
So when you
have a presentation and you record it or our episodes, we rewatch them to learn from them and get better. All right. But for recording, is sex act. Why? Tell me.
Rosie (03:43)
Maybe it turns them on.
Maybe it turns them on. Maybe that's their porn.
Or like you said, maybe they watch it and take notes. Ooh, I don't look very sexy in that position. I mean, surely it's more about feeling, but I don't know. I-
Roula (03:54)
you
Okay,
so let's go back a few things. So if they, I like what you said, maybe they taped it because it's their porn, it's their, it turns them on. There's nothing wrong with that, do you think? I gave you a retorique question, which I answered my question.
Rosie (04:10)
No, right. No, I don't think we should shame. No,
I think there's a lot of shaming around. your face. Roula likes talking about sex everybody. So I don't know where this episode's going to go. sorry. Is it a secret? I don't think so. I think everybody knows by this point Roula. but there's a lot of shaming, I think, you know, around fetishes or different kinks or.
Roula (04:25)
Shh.
Rosie (04:37)
preferences, all that sort of thing. Why though? I love that you were breaking down the walls on your podcast, talking about this stuff. You've had a few episodes now, unpacking different episodes. Do you? Go follow the, I almost said the name of my podcast. Go follow the Life Affairs podcast. It will be out. Yes. So go follow the Life Affairs podcast. Roula is an amazing host. This is
Roula (04:48)
have one coming up.
Yeah, next week. Where by the time people listen to this episode, it's gonna be past.
Shut
up, shut up. We're not talking about that. You're not promoting me now. Yeah You're so sweet. Yes Let's talk about you and me. Let's talk about all the good things and the things that may be Let's talk about sex. Let's talk about sex
Rosie (05:05)
we're talking about sex, sorry.
Let's talk about sex, baby. Let's talk about you and me.
I've forgotten what question I was even reading.
real still going.
Roula (05:24)
I was still going on dancing. Having my party. I even know this song. Do want me to start? No, no.
Rosie (05:26)
I'm too sexy for my pants. You are having a party. Okay, go. No?
Okay. I think that would have been fun. Sex tapes. Yes, there's a lot of shame around people's preferences over what's not mainstream. Why? We're all individuals. We are all individuals. So if somebody is filming themselves having sex because that's what they want to do, well, okay. Why don't we judge that?
Roula (05:34)
Sex tapes, let's go back to that. Yeah, yeah.
Rosie (05:55)
And I guess things can be genuinely leaked. There's such a thing as, I don't know, hackers or acc- Like have you ever accidentally texted somebody? You meant to send it to somebody else, but you sent it to a different person. Have you ever done that? I do it all the time.
Roula (06:10)
Yes.
No, that's all the time I'm careful.
Rosie (06:15)
You're careful.
It's easy enough to do. So imagine if somebody, I don't know, maybe they're sexting and sending a picture or something. You could... No, I know, but talk about it. Okay, fine. A sextape's different. It probably was back then. It probably was. Okay. So we're saying, was it genuinely leaked or was it...
Roula (06:26)
But we're talking about sex tapes. How can, I don't know if it was a tape or it was, okay, okay, okay. It was a tape.
Rosie (06:39)
inverted commas leaked like it was just a story they actually released it to the press I don't know
I don't know. I've often judged actually. Cause I don't know what year it was that the Paris Hilton sex tape came out, but it definitely was spoken about when I was growing up.
Roula (06:48)
Yeah, I don't know either.
Rosie (07:00)
Where was I going with that?
I have no idea.
Roula (07:04)
to know if that's a tape
or not.
Rosie (07:09)
Yeah, I don't know where I was going. At all.
Roula (07:13)
I'm trying, I'm searching to see, yeah. 2003.
Rosie (07:15)
What year? Yeah, well, I...
Okay, so it was. So 2003, I was 12. So yeah, okay. It was happening in the time I was growing up and as a teenager was spoken about. And yeah, the word on the street was that it wasn't leaked. Like, come on, this is how she got famous. And so people quite often accuse her. I don't even remember who her boyfriend was in the sex tape.
Like all I remember is it's Paris Hilton's sex tape. Do you remember? No, who, well, I don't even remember who it was. He was in it though, right? Yeah.
Roula (07:47)
You never hear about the boyfriend. It's not his sex tape, it's her sex tape. yeah, just like Pamela
Anderson. Pamela Anderson, was in 96 or in 98. 96 and in 98, it was commercially released, but I don't know if she got... Okay, but what I want to say here, we're not shaming or blaming. I'm just trying to understand.
Rosie (07:59)
Okay. Okay.
No. No.
No, okay, here's my question.
Roula (08:13)
It's more exciting
to say it's leaking. So when they say it leaked, it makes it more valuable to seek scandalous. What's your question?
Rosie (08:20)
Scandalous, yeah. But isn't that disgusting?
Because if it leaks, it means it's not consensual. They didn't consent to you watching it, yet it's more appealing to people. That is wrong. My question, however, and this may be the very first time you tell me to piss off, I'm not answering that.
Roula (08:36)
but you
said something so good. Yeah.
Rosie (08:39)
is have you ever recorded a sex tape?
Roula (08:44)
Huh.
I don't know who's listening.
Rosie (08:48)
Next we'll pass on that question. Some things, yeah. See, it's so personal, right? But I guess that's why some people are porn stars and other people aren't. Some people are very comfortable to do that sort of thing on camera.
Roula (08:49)
Some things.
let's say I did I surely will make sure it doesn't leak
Rosie (09:03)
Yeah. Like,
yeah. Yeah. You'd be embarrassed?
Roula (09:10)
Wow.
I have children now.
Rosie (09:15)
Mm.
Roula (09:18)
think yes that that would be mortifying I mean okay I like to talk about sex and I'm open about it and I want everyone to enjoy it and have fun etc but there is also a limit to what am I putting out there there's my private life and if I talk about sex it's just to have people enjoy themselves in their private lives whether on their own or with a group or whatever but this remains private you know
Rosie (09:34)
Mm.
Yeah, for you, but for someone
else, it might not. And that's still okay. Right.
Roula (09:47)
For someone else it might not, yes yes.
So yeah, no, I would be mortified and...
Yeah, I'm still thinking how much I should, I must be trusting people coming into my house to be negligent or to talk to someone about it. It has also to do something with trust. Let's say it leaked, they must have trust someone about it. What I remember from Pamela Anderson, and I'm not sure it's true, they were workers in the house and they found their honeymoon tape and that was it.
Rosie (10:06)
Mmm. Mmm.
Mmmmm
Roula (10:23)
and they
made it leak. And her story, they were working on their bedroom. They're renovating their bedroom. And this is where the tape was. And then I'm thinking, before you renovate your house, you make sure everything is out. And if you're not doing it in person, you ask people to do it. And probably the people doing it watched it. In other instances, it's
It's hard because it's always the name of the girl that came out with the sex tape. So when we say it's the girl sex tape and now when we give our opinion, it's like, we're now shaming and judging the girl. It's never the name of the boy. But what if they contributed and leaking them?
Rosie (10:52)
Yeah!
Hmm. Hmm.
And they played just as much a part in the sex tape as well. Sex involves more than one person.
Roula (11:07)
and their name is not there. Right? So why
don't they put both names and they have a relationship, their boyfriend or whatever, and it's not a big deal, but you said something so valuable, even if this thing leaked, the bad is us, human being, trying to search for it and watch it. So our contribution,
Rosie (11:30)
Yes!
Roula (11:32)
It's the same as now with social media. We seek all these bad movies like a fight on the street or someone big mouthing the other person. It creates some excitement to people to watch and we are contributing in making it happen.
Rosie (11:42)
Hmm.
Yes,
we're contributing and making it happen. Yeah. What a scary thought. And I think the next time, dear listener, you go to look up something scandalous, maybe go, Hey, did this person consent to this being out in the public domain? Can you imagine if a sex tape of yours, hypothetically, was leaked and you are a
People are out there searching it and they know it was leaked. You didn't want it over there. You're mortified. But there they are getting a kick out of watching it. Like, whoa, that's pretty twisted.
Roula (12:25)
Yeah.
Yes, these days we have to, before we swipe and click, it's really good to see. Do I want to watch this? What value does it add to my life by watching this? Do I my kids to watch it? And it doesn't have to be something related to sex. can be... There are so many weird stuff going out. I mean, you're the TikTok influencer, you know more.
Rosie (12:40)
Hmm.
Well, you know, one thing that comes to mind, we're talking a lot, but you know what, let's roll with it. One thing that comes to mind over recent years is, you know, a lot of police brutality incidents and videos were being posted online of these horrible things unfolding.
I felt conflicted about that. Like I think it's important to have accurate news and share what's going on so people know, but putting a video out of somebody being brutalized by the police or somebody, you know,
Roula (13:28)
There's a new law in the Netherlands and I love it. Every social media post related to someone being beaten up or has to do with violence, the person posting the tape will get a fine of 9,000 euros. 9,000 euros. Because, you know, at school, schools,
Rosie (13:30)
Yes, sir.
Wow.
Roula (13:55)
outside in front of schools there's so much fight happening and taped and people sending all these videos around. I'm so glad this law now... I have to verify I think it is already active. I'm not sure but I'm sure a law is coming 9 000 euro fine for posting a tape on people being hurt abused etc.
Rosie (13:59)
Mm-hmm.
Mm.
Wow,
do you think it's gonna work? This law?
Roula (14:28)
I hope so. I really hope so. Yes.
Rosie (14:29)
Mmm, me too. Mmm.
Roula (14:33)
So we don't want to be fined 9,000 euros, so we're not sending out any. So if Rosie be mean to me, do not put this on social media because then you will get 9,000 euro fine.
Rosie (14:37)
No, thank you.
Ha ha!
and I'm gonna make you pay. No, anyway, we kind of talked about sex tapes. I feel like that went in circles, but it was a really interesting question. What motivates people to film them? And are they legitimately leaked or is that just a facade?
Roula (14:50)
she's so dangerous.
Yeah, well, that's the main question. What do you think? Are they legitimately leaked?
Rosie (15:09)
I think there's probably
examples of both. That's what I think. And I think there's probably more examples of it being leaked. I actually do think so. One that comes to mind, I think it was Jennifer Lawrence. I don't remember how long ago it was, but there was a photo of her. I don't remember if she was naked or in lingerie or something, but her phone was hacked and it was released on the internet. And she was furious because it was private.
Roula (15:13)
Yeah, ⁓ so good.
terrible.
know the like what the heck what we do in our private life why would you even care just get on with your life people all right we have to wrap it up
Rosie (15:45)
Yeah, I don't get it. Get on with your life, exactly. Anyway,
if you have a sex tape, let us know. I don't really want to see it. That's my preference. Maybe Roula does. You can ask her. We'll catch you in the next episode.
Roula (15:53)
haha
All right, bye!
