Roula’s had it with newsletters. The constant sign-up popups, the endless “limited-time offers,” the inbox chaos—it’s too much. In this episode, she and Rosie dive into the growing epidemic of newsletter fatigue, why it’s become the new social media hustle, and whether anyone’s actually reading them anymore.
They unpack how something that was meant to feel personal turned into another marketing machine, share their love-hate relationship with online content, and debate if “audio newsletters” could be the future. Spoiler: they’re not making one.
Would you still read a newsletter from us—or would it go straight to spam?

TRANSCRIPT
Roula (00:00)
Okay, I have a question for you and I think you will have good stuff to talk about it.
Rosie (00:02)
How unusual. ⁓
no pressure.
Roula (00:19)
If I tell you that I have newsletters fatigue, what does this mean to you?
Rosie (00:25)
Poof.
Does this mean your inbox is getting spammed with newsletters from like all these newsletters you were like, that's interesting. And you've signed up and then they just keep coming in your inbox and now you don't even read them because they just, there's too many. Is this what it is?
Roula (00:43)
Yeah, it is what it is, but we mean differently now. Check out our episode about it is what it is. How do you feel about all these newsletters?
Rosie (00:45)
⁓ story of my life.
There's two It Is What It Is episodes. Yes. We will link those. Yeah. I mean.
Well, I'm going to answer that with a question. Why do you sign up to newsletters? Cause I'm wondering if it's the same reason as I sign up.
Roula (01:10)
My fatigue is by just suggesting to me to sign up to their newsletter.
Rosie (01:15)
⁓ yeah, that's annoying too.
Roula (01:18)
There were times a couple of years ago, not very long time ago, newsletter became very trendy. Like it's better than social media. It's better just make a newsletter, share it with the people. then just like anything else, it becomes overwhelming. if I have, and it's so hard to choose who's gonna send the best newsletter to whom am I gonna subscribe? Because now everyone has a newsletter.
Rosie (01:37)
Yeah.
Roula (01:49)
And if I have multiple interests, how on earth am I going to have the time to read all these newsletters?
Rosie (01:56)
You know, I sign up to the newsletters and then I just don't read them. I might read for the first couple of weeks and then I'm just like, I can't be bothered because they take so long to read. I don't have time to do that. When I'm checking my email, I'm just quickly scrolling through anything important. Yeah, read that, reply to that. I don't have time to spend 15, 20 minutes reading this big newsletter.
Roula (02:21)
Yes, and it's a newsletter and then there are links. ⁓ Yoshi is playing with my socks. I wish you could see him. Look, he's sitting here behind me.
Rosie (02:26)
yeah, there's links.
Is that Yoshi again?
⁓ it is. Cheeky boy.
Roula (02:38)
So in the newsletter and then there's a link into it or there is some information. So you have to click on the link or you have to go and look for the information. And it's so much time consuming. What?
Rosie (02:48)
Oh, and you know what else is annoying? It might start
off valuable and then they have something to sell and it starts off. just mention it, but then they keep pushing emails every day. Limited time price, this, that, the other, if you sign up now, you get this bonus. Oh no, there's only 24 hours to go, 12 hours to go, one hour to go, half an hour to go. Oh my God, Rosie, you're going to miss out. And then you miss out and they say, Oh no, Rosie. Like.
Roula (03:14)
and the
next day you have the same offer.
You know, OK, in the beginning it was exciting, something new, but now everyone is doing it. So why don't you price your OK, it's psychological, it's marketing. And I have this trauma feeling with marketing because everything we do is so only marketing related. That's not the topic. The newsletter is a topic. yes. Newsletter people spend so much time on newsletter, and I was thinking that
Rosie (03:36)
Yeah.
Yes, stay on.
Roula (03:48)
Should Rosie and Rula do newsletter? No. No. If we're going to do newsletter, we're going to send you a recording so you can listen to the newsletter and not have to read it.
Rosie (03:50)
I've had the thought as well. No!
wouldn't do that.
Roula (04:03)
Okay, we didn't discuss this, Rosy, and that's on the fly that I'm telling you this.
Rosie (04:06)
think you can do it, but you know what? You
can't listen inside the email. You still got to tap a link to listen. Like there's still that hurdle. And I was thinking about, should we do a newsletter as we were having this conversation? And I was like, but we've released episodes every day. And then I thought, okay, maybe like a weekly wrap up, but it can't be waffle or maybe like our favorite episode from the week or just something that's like a couple of sentences, maybe gives a giggle. And then it's.
Roula (04:13)
Yeah.
Yes.
I rather
have people subscribe to our podcast, you know, and send off sending them email. Podcast, subscribe to the podcast, connect with us through the website. We answered all our emails. So this interaction.
Rosie (04:38)
And send us messages!
Yeah.
Even the one about belly
buttons, which we weren't sure if it was sincere or not. Everybody has a chance.
Roula (04:57)
Yes, but this was a really long
email. So, yes, my newsletter fatigue is when I am on LinkedIn or Instagram or receiving some some email from someone asking me to subscribe to their newsletter. It's like, do you think you're special? Everyone is sending me a newsletter. Why would I choose you? I can ask this question for our podcast. Do we think we're special?
Rosie (05:23)
You are s- yeah,
well, no no, I wanna hear from people. Would you subscribe if we had a newsletter? And what would you want in it? Because if it's a newsletter like everybody else's, fuck that. And if it creates too much work for us, fuck that. We already spend enough-
Roula (05:25)
Why should people listen to us?
So we want to
give you a newsletter without working hard for it.
Rosie (05:45)
Exactly. There's
gotta be like a chat GPT prompt or something.
Roula (05:49)
Yeah, okay. I really needed to let this out, the newsletter fatigue. Otherwise, I will have a migraine from it if I keep thinking of it. And yeah, that's my migraine episodes. Go back and listen to it if you have migraine. And if you don't, you might have migraine.
Rosie (05:53)
Okay, do you feel better?
God, yes, no migraines.
my gosh, yes, newsletters.
Roula (06:09)
Okay, I don't
want to subscribe to any newsletters. Do not ask me to subscribe to your newsletter because I need something else, but I don't know what.
Rosie (06:15)
Damn. I'm pretty sure I asked you to subs...
I'm pretty sure I asked you Rula to subscribe to my newsletter whenever I started it over a year ago. Yeah. So I was the person. ⁓
Roula (06:23)
I did subscribe and I was excited to read and then I
stopped. was like, my goodness, I don't have time for this.
Rosie (06:31)
No, you didn't stop, I just
stopped sending them!
Roula (06:35)
You did, you did, yeah, yeah, but the first two, and you know...
Rosie (06:38)
think I only sent two.
Roula (06:41)
This-
You worked hard. I'd rather follow your updates on TikTok than read the newsletter. It's nice. It's interactive. I can send you a message or whomever. Do you reply? you know, of course, if we want to sell something, probably newsletter will help. Sell a course or whatever. It's just.
Rosie (06:45)
It's like this is too hard.
Yeah, interesting. Isn't that fascinating?
and
Roula (07:10)
It's, it's, think it's overrated and everyone's doing, when some, when everyone start doing the same thing.
Then come on!
Rosie (07:19)
I mean, people make money
off it, but I mean, it doesn't mean it's fun. Although money is nice.
Roula (07:25)
people
are spending so much time on it. We're not experts because of course, if we listen to multi millionaires or who have a successful business, they swear by the newsletter. ⁓ But we don't.
Rosie (07:33)
Blah blah blah.
Yes. I think we're digressing.
Rula, we're digressing. I think this is the end of the episode. Don't fucking ask Rula to join your newsletter. Don't do what I did.
Roula (07:40)
Yes.
Don't.
All right. And do not make a newsletter. Find something else to do. Spend your time on something more valuable. OK, I know. Bye.
Rosie (07:58)
Okay, bye!
